The Chocolate Box — See’s Piece by Piece #18 — Peanut Butter Pattie

Mixing peanut butter and chocolate is a classic taste that appeals to young and old. See’s Candies offers this combination and I was curious to see how a “gourmet” peanut butter cup-type candy would fare.seespnutbutter

Tasting Report:

Description: Well, first, See’s calls its chocolate and peanut butter creation a “pattie,” not a cup. It is a plump pillow of a candy, round and as big around as a quarter and covered in milk chocolate. Two peanut butter patties come to a frilled brown paper cup. The inside is a creamy, smooth tan with a strong peanut aroma. While the candy is widely available in the stores, I could not find it listed on the See’s website.

Taste: The first bite tasted like peanut butter, but the kind with lots of fillers, not the all-natural, nothing-but-peanuts kind. It was a blast back to my childhood, but I was looking for a purer peanut butter taste. As the smooth filling melted in my mouth, the sweetness of the candy became overwhelming. Perhaps a dark chocolate coating would have given the sweet filling a bit of contrast. Salt was also a dominant flavor. The candy coated my tongue and left me with an unpleasant after taste I couldn’t wait to rinse out.

See’s Trivia: According to Margaret Moos Pick’s book See’s Famous Old Time Candies, founder Charles See tried to get with the times in the 1920s, so he installed booths and ice cream parlors in some of his shops. But customers came to See’s for the chocolate and candy, not the sandwiches and malts, so the experiment was short lived.

Ingredients: Sugar, Milk, Cocoa Butter, Chocolate, Soy Lecithin, Vanillin, Peanuts, Sugar, Dextrose, Flour, Salt.

Well Fed Network Rating: As compared to other See’s Candies on a scale of one to 10, the Peanut Butter Pattie would only get a one from The Chocolate Box. I couldn’t imagine buying this candy again, not with so many other great See’s pieces to choose from. Pro: Generous size candy that came two to a cup. Con: Strong, unpleasant after taste.

i love your chokh-leht post.

have you tried valomilk?

(i haven’t, but the very description just makes me want to run down midwest and buy an entire carton)

I agree with you. There are definately many better see’s candies then the peanut butter patties. My favorite is the caramels. Thanks for the post.
