The Chocolate Box — See’s Piece by Piece #21 — Chocolate Buttercreams

Long time readers of See’s Piece by Piece will know that See’s Candies is king, or is it queen, okay let’s just say royal ruler, of the buttercream.

Meltingly smooth but with a taste that lingers, rich but not too rich, sweet but not too sweet, full-tasting and hospitable to other flavor additions, See’s buttercream fillings are succulently superb.

Today The Chocolate Box will taste See’s Chocolate Buttercream and immediately go into a swoon.seesdkchocobutter

Tasting Report

Description:
The Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate Buttercreams are piece number one and two in the See’s catalog and website. These very popular pieces are squarish rounds that look a lot like the vanilla buttercreams except for an appealing little chocolate swirl on the top. Inside the filling is smooth and a deep milk chocolate in color.

Taste:
Yum. Need more detail? Yum. Yum.
This is a seriously good candy. The milk chocolate version ends up tasting a bit sweeter than the dark chocolate, but both coverings are merely containers for conveying the chocolate buttercream to your mouth. The buttercreams were smooth, luscious and full of the fresh taste of butter and a strong but not overpowering chocolate. The candies both had a really satisfying finish. The creamy chocolate taste hit my tongue at first bite and built up with each succeeding nibble. The buttercream had a nice, lingering finish.

See’s Trivia:
The Milk Chocolate Buttercream (or Butter as it is referred to in some See’s documents) is one of See’s two most popular chocolate flavors. The other is Milk Chocolate Bordeaux.

Ingredients:
Milk chocolate (sugar, milk, cocoa butter, chocolate, soy lecithin, vanillin) and dark chocolate (sugar, chocolate, cocoa butter, butter, soy lecithin, vanilla, vanillin) coatings, sugar, cream, corn syrup, butter, chocolate, cocoa butter, salt.

Well Fed Ratings:
Compared to other See’s Candies, I’d rate the Milk Chocolate Buttercream a 9.25 and the Dark Buttercream a 9.5. They can have a spot in The Chocolate Box anytime. Pros: The rich, creamy chocolate buttercream. Cons: I liked the dark chocolate version a bit better than the milk, but both coatings were overwhelmed by the filling.

Out of curiosity, has ANY candy gotten a 10 from this rating system? If so, which?

Dark Chocolate Bordeaux, Raspberry Creams and a few others have come close but no, I’ve never rated a See’s Candies candy a perfect 10.

Partly my personality, partly my philosophy. Partly because I’m afraid once I give out a 10, what if I find one that beats it?

You gave me a good idea, though. I might do a wrap up column that gives all the candies and their ratings to date.

I will tell you I did give out a one (to milk chocolate covered cherries). It wasn’t pretty.

Search Sugar Savvy’s “The Chocolate Box” category if you want to see my whole sordid history of See’s candies and their ratings.

Hey, here’s another idea: maybe we could have a column soliciting readers for their perfect 10 candies, with a reason why. I think it’d be neat to see what everybody’s favorites are…
