Tasting Report
Description:
See’s Apple Pie Truffle (a registered name) is piece number 48 on the website and in the catalog. It is also one of the featured candies in See’s Candies’ summer variety assortment (which can be shipped without extra packaging and charge during the warm weather.) It is the shape of a rough heart or chunky teardrop, about an inch wide and an inch and a half long. The truffle is coated with white chocolate and the top is crisscrossed with thin lines of white chocolate drizzle. The buttercream inside in a warm beige color and very smooth looking.
Taste:
Once you bite into the See’s Apple Pie Truffle the scent grabs you and doesn’t let go. The smell of apples and cinnamon waft through the air and immediately you think warm apple pie. The taste only confirms you are eating apple pie. I was surprised to see how smooth the buttercream was, I thought for sure it had slices of apples in it, the taste is that convincing. The hard white chocolate shell that encases the truffle adds to the tromp l’oeil affect, giving the candy some texture and chewiness, although it doesn’t add much to the taste. Fragrant with cinnamon and redolent with memories and associations, this filling’s only fault was its sweetness. Not overpowering, but just too much. The buttercream lasts a satisfying long time in the mouth, full of the apples (Granny Smith according to the website) and spice, but also the clinging sweetness.
See’s Trivia:
Since Warren Buffett is in the news this week because of his philanthropy, I thought I would mention his company, Berkshire Hathaway, bought See’s Candies from the See’s family in 1972.
Ingredients:
Sugar, cream, corn syrup, cocoa butter, milk, freeze dried apple, butter, cinnamon, salt, natural flavor, soy lecithin, vanillin
Well Fed Network Ratings:
I wish I could rate the filling and the candy separately. The apple pie buttercream filling was one of the most exciting I’ve eaten in a while and is worth at least a 7 or higher, but overall the candy was too sweet. While I enjoyed eating my See’s Apple Pie Truffle, I don’t think I would I would choose this truffle for The Chocolate Box more than once. I am giving it an overall rating of a 6.5. Pros: Apple pie taste in a truffle. Intoxicating aroma. Cons: Too sweet. White chocolate coating was more a texture than a taste.

the apple pie truffle is one of my least favorites. the smell is right on but the taste is just weird– maybe i just don’t expect that flavor in truffle form? and the texture is also a little pulpy which i find distracting.
