The Chocolate Box — See’s Piece By Piece #28 — Milk Chocolate Divinity

It’s been hotter than you know where across most of America lately, so I thought I’d try a See’s Candies’ chocolate that was, well, a little more divine. So, this week See’s Piece by Piece sampled Milk Chocolate Divinity, piece number 42 on the See’s Candies website.

Divinity is an old-fashioned confection defined by Wikipedia as a nougat-like candy made with egg whites, corn syrup and sugar. I could imagine the mother of See’s Candies’ founder, Mary See, at her candy kettle at home a century ago whipping up a batch of this candy. See’s dresses up their version by enrobing it in milk chocolate (a white chocolate version is also available.). The filling flavor reminds me of See’s vanilla fudge, which I really liked.

Tasting Report:divinity

Description: A thumb-sized rough oval of See’s milk chocolate surrounds the white divinity filling which is crammed full of chopped walnuts.

Taste: The milk chocolate melts into the filling and gives it a bit more substance. The filling melts in your mouth very quickly and is similar to a whipped fudge in consistency. There is a slightly fruity note and then the milk and sugar components are gone and you are left with bits of the fresh and crispy walnut pieces and the sensation of having had your tongue coated by something creamy. I think the fruity, slightly acidic note comes from the cocoa butter in the filling.

See’s Trivia: You can visit See’s Candies on vacation. The company has shops in Hawaii, Hong Kong, Japan and Mexico. In addition, there are See’s carts with pre-packaged goodies in many American airports.

Ingredients: Milk chocolate coating (sugar, milk, cocoa butter, chocolate, soy lecithin, vanillin), corn syrup, sugar, English walnuts, cocoa butter, egg whites, butter, milk, salt, vanilla, vanillin.

Well Fed Network Rating: I enjoyed this candy but didn’t think it was so heavenly. As compared to other See’s Candies I’ve sampled, I’d give it a 7.5. Pros: The milk chocolate and nuts take this candy to a higher level. Cons: The slightly fruity taste is a bit off putting and the candy taste really doesn’t linger.
