The Chocolate Box — See’s Piec by Piece #33 — Dark Chocolate Maple Nut Buttercream

Some of my favorite things? Luscious buttercream fillings. Dark Chocolate. Real maple flavor. See’s Candies puts it all together in its Dark Chocolate Maple Nut Buttercream. How does it rate? See the tasting report below.

Tasting Report:maplenut

Description: This candy is a high-domed round of dark chocolate containing a creamy beige filling with a whiff of real maple dominating it when you first bite into it. My sample was packed with large chunks of crisp English walnuts. It is piece number 25 on the website and catalog.

Taste: I’d like more maple and less nuts. The maple buttercream is very tasty, but the candy was so stuffed with the English walnuts that that became a predominant texture and taste, adding a slightly tannic note to the candy. The first bite gives up more of a chocolate taste than the maple, which is sweet but not overpoweringly so. As the chocolate notes fade away, the nuts became more and more obvious. The wonderfully real maple taste of the buttercream coats the tongue and lasts a while, but so do the nuts, which I found myself still chewing long after the rest of the candy was gone.

See’s Trivia: See’s Candies is hiring for the busy winter holiday season and is looking for customer service help. Do you live in southern California and want to support your See’s “happy habit?’ Click here for more info. (Yes, you get a discount on See’s Candies.)

Ingredients: Dark chocolate coating (sugar, chocolate, cocoa butter, butter, soy lecithin, vanilla, vanillin), sugar, English walnuts, cream, maple sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, butter, salt.

Well Fed Network Ratings: As compared to other See’s Candies, I would rate the Dark Chocolate Maple Nut Buttercream an eight on a scale of one to 10. Pros: Natural maple taste that works well with the dark chocolate coating. Cons: Too many nuts overpower the candy’s taste and texture.

Faith,
Being a huge maple as well as dark chocolate fan like yourself, this is one of my top choices. But now that you mention it, less nuts and more maple sugarey goodness WOULD be an improvement. You’re right.

Have you not been receiving free samples lately - or just not reporting on them? I’ve enjoyed that detail in your past reviews.

I’m tempted to apply for a part -time Holiday job, not so much for the discount on See’s but rather to score a foxy white See’s shirtdress/uniform. I really want one of those - they are completely hot!

See’s gives out free samples pretty much for simply walking up to the counter. I’ve either gotten a sample of something I’ve already written about or have bought a number of weeks pieces at once so I haven’t written about my samples lately. My See’s stash is now gone and I need to resupply so you should be seeing some free sample mentions in future columns.

You’ve given a great idea of what to dress as for Halloween — A See’s Counterperson. The only downside is that people will expect ME to give candy to THEM.

Faith: That was my idea, exactly! Maybe with your “in” at See’s, you’ll actually be able to get your hands on a dress. Let me know how it goes!
