The Chocolate Box — See’s Piece by Piece #36 — Dark Chocolate Covered Raisins

Raisins are a popular snack at my house, even when they are not chocolate covered. But cover a nice, juicy raisin in chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, and you’ve got The Chocolate Box salivating.

Tasting Report

dcrDescription: See’s Candies Dark Chocolate Covered Raisins are covered with a rich, glossy brown dark chocolate coating. There is so much chocolate coating that the raisins’ wrinkles seem to disappear. The only hint of the raisin beneath is an occasional fissure in the shiny surface. Some of these treats are almost the size of my thumbnail.
(For a description and tasting of See’s Candies Milk Chocolate Raisins, see the write up here.)

At the See’s Candies’ stores, both types of chocolate covered raisins are sold by weight or in prepacked bags or one pound boxes as part of a “bridge mix” with other chocolate covered goodies. On the web, you can only order them as a bridge mix box.

Taste: Eat them one by one or by the handful, either way they are the ultimate in a movie theater treat (take that Raisinet!)

The dark chocolate seems to melt into the sweet, juicy raisin playing up the wine notes in both the chocolate and the dried grape. Not sweet, not cloying, just perfect. I bet you can’t just eat one.

A note about the raisins See’s uses for this candy - they are soft, juicy and easy to chew without leaving a lot of little pieces stuck in your teeth. They also seem larger than your average supermarket raisin.

See’s Trivia: See’s Candies uses “Ruby Red Raisins” in its raisin candies, according to the book See’s Famous Old Time Candies by Margaret Moos Pick.

Ingredients: Dark chocolate coating (sugar, chocolate, cocoa butter, butter, soy lecithin, vanilla, vanillin), raisins, sugar, corn syrup, dextrin, confectionery glaze

Well Fed Network Ratings: This is a simple candy in a complex world that I found very satisfying. On a scale of one to 10 as compared to other See’s Candies, I would rate Dark Chocolate Covered Raisins a 10 (only the second 10 I’ve awarded). The milk chocolate version was rated a 9.5. Pros: Satisfying, rich taste. Cons: Not for you if you aren’t a raisin and/or dark chocolate fan.
