Asian Sweet of the Week: Kasugai Litchi Gummy

Reviewed this week: Kasugai Litchi Gummy from Kasugai Seika Co., Ltd. Nagoya, Japan
Ingredients: Sugar, corn syrup (corn starch, water), concentrated apple, litchi juice, gelatin, oblate powder, d-sorbitol, citric acid, milk calcium, pectin, artificial litchi flavor, palm oil, emulsifer (glycerin fatty acid ester, soybean lecithin)Package copy and appearance: The front has images of litchis with the copy, “Litchi is a fruit originally grown in Southern China and said to have been favored by Yang Guifei. Kasugai’s Litchi gummies are gummy candy which has the flavor and texture of the original fruit.” The gummies are individually wrapped and have an image of a half unpeeled litchi and the copy “litchi gummy super juicy”.
Tasting Notes: The gummy is light purple in color. The flavor of this gummy is light with hints of grape and apple. It hits upon the flavor of the litchi jellies that come in the little cups. They’re small and not too sweet. The texture is perfect - not too tough, but not too mushy.
Verdict: If they weren’t individually wrapped it’d be very easy to go through most of the bag.

Our daughter gave us some of the kiwi gummies for Christmas. I wanted to say how very delicious they are! I will look for them when next in Seattle at Uwajimaya store. Thank you. Jani Howe
