The Chocolate Box — See’s Piece-by-Piece #42 — Milk Chocolate Datenut
Continuing my tasting of See’s Candies more exotic (or perhaps more esoteric) flavors, this week I sampled the Milk Chocolate Datenut. See below for my reaction to this old-fashioned combination.
Tasting Report:
Description: This candy is round, brown and is crowned. It has a fine sanding of chopped nuts under its milk chocolate coating. The center has large, dark amber swirls of date and chunks of English walnuts crammed into it. I suspect this may not be a very popular piece. It doesn’t appear to be available on the website, although it is sold in the stores.
Tasting Report: I like dates. I like nuts. I like See’s milk chocolate. All three together are just as good as they are individually, combining them just didn’t make the Milk Chocolate Datenut candy any better than the sum of its parts. The dates tasted moist and flavorful with a deep fruity sweetness that was well balanced by the fresh, crispy walnuts. The almond nut “dust” on top didn’t really register as a separate component. The milk chocolate at first didn’t make much of an impression, then it melted a bit and softened the date and nut taste, but wasn’t as long lasting as the sticky date filling was. It was a very satisfying candy.
See’s Trivia: The extra charges for warm weather shipping are over for the season. Order See’s chocolates through the website or catalog without fear of melting or surcharges.
Ingredients: Milk Chocolate Coating (sugar, milk, cocoa butter, chocolate, soy lecithin, vanillin), dates, sugar, brown sugar, cream, English walnuts, corn syrup, butter, salt, vanilla, almonds.
Well Fed Network Rating: This was a hard one to decide on. I like the candy, I just didn’t think it was anything I would seek out again. As compared to other See’s Candies, I would rate it a 7.5 on a scale of one to 10. Pro: Good tasting ingredients. Con: I just couldn’t get excited about it.
