The Chocolate Box — See’s Piece by Piece #46 — Almond Royal
There are a whole group of candies out there that seem to belong to another generation, whispering perhaps of a time when keeping fine candies on hand to offer to even the most casual of guests was considered the mark of a gracious host or hostess. Or perhaps, it was gracious guests who would keep a stock of delicate treasures available to present to their welcoming hosts.
See’s Candies’ Almond Royals (a registered name) seem to belong to this nostalgic era of candy consumption. They are an old-fashioned (or perhaps timeless) treat and for genteel presentation and candy preservation come individually wrapped. They are also available in tins, which aid in keeping the candy fresh for gracious future offerings.
Tasting Report
Description: Almond Royals are composed of a dark chocolate caramel wrapped around two whole almonds. The entire confection is about an inch or so long with the tops of the almonds visible on the top of the candy. It comes wrapped in a clear cellophane wrapper. It is available in See’s Candies’ stores by the piece or in the stores and through the website and catalog as part of various assortments and in one-pound tins.
Taste: The first taste is of a dark chocolate followed by a pleasant burnt sugar note which soon dominated the chocolate taste. The almonds were crunchy and fresh. The combination of almonds and caramel worked well in terms of both taste and texture. Surprisingly, the candy did not seem very sweet and the caramel was not sticky and would probably not endanger any dental work.
See’s Trivia: See’s Candies offers a recipe for cookies made with these candies here.
Ingredients: My official See’s Candies ingredients list doesn’t include the Almond Royal. The website description of the candy includes Dutch dark chocolate cocoa and fresh roasted almonds.
WellFed Network Ratings: This candy was fine, but unexceptional. On a scale of one to 10 as compared to other See’s Candies, I would rate the Almond Royal a five.

There’s a version with pecans and vanilla caramel. It was darned tasty, but I haven’t seen it on the See’s website. I got a bag at SFO.
