Asian Sweet of the Week: Collon, Matcha Milk
Reviewed this week: Collon, green milk tea flavored from Nishimoto Trading Co., Ltd.
Ingredients: sugar, wheat flour, shortening, whole milk powder, dextrin, lactose, whole milk powder, cheese powder, corn syrup, green tea powder, potato starch, cream powder, brandy, palm oil, salt, nonfat dry milk, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flabor [sic], sorbitol, soya lecithin, baking soda
Package copy and appearance: The only English on the package and the box is: Collon, New! and open. There are illustrations of the collon on the box. On the English translation of the ingredients is the word colon. Mmm…. colons… though I suppose if you look at the shape…
Tasting Notes: This is sort of like a thicker version of chocolate piroulines. A light, flaky wafer on the outside with creamy green tea filling on the inside. It’s not a very flavorful filling, but it is quite fluffy. However, it doesn’t have the bitterness or powdery flavor that a lot of green tea candies possess. It’s mostly creamy and sweet.
Verdict: This candy was okay. The wafer was nice, and the cream’s texture was likeable compared to the chocolate inside piroulines. I think that some of the other available flavors might be more impactful. It’s worth exploring, since the outer wafer is quite tasty.
