Chocolate worth rioting for?
When the editor of Sugar Savvy, Jaay, asked if anyone wanted to review some sweetriot candy, I responded within less than a minute of her original question. I was very keen on trying the candy for the first time, and I also adore cacao nibs.
The shipment contained their happy holly-days pack, which includes one of each of their flavors - flavor 50, flavor 65 and flavor 70. When I received my shipment I noticed the flavor 50 canister was devoid of little chocolate friends, with the plastic safety seal removed. Another seal was slipping off. Some investigation found that the candy was not mishandled. So it is possible that either there was a very ambitious postal office employee or some questionable quality control at sweetriot.
So, despite this little issue, are sweetriot candies worth rioting over?
The tins are really cool. If they were slightly bigger they could probably be recycled to hold the older iPod shuffles. As you can see from the photos the designs are retro. In the flip top there are little printed paper fortunes, which are actually descriptions of countries of cacao origin and lucky numbers. The pieces are shiny and waxy - they resemble the look of chocolate Nerds.
flavor 50 is described as 100% cacao nibs dunked in 50% chocolate to tempt milk chocolate fans
flavor 70 is cacao nibs covered in 70% dark chocolate with a hint of espresso for coffee lovers
flavor 50 tasting notes: This flavor is milky with a sweet vanilla flavor. The proportion of cacao nib to chocolate is high, leaving a stronger bitter, nutty aftertaste instead of chocolate. Overall, a pleasant flavor that as described would interest nut-loving milk chocolate fans.
flavor 70 tasting notes: The espresso flavor comes out very strongly in this candy. It has that soft mellow beginning followed by cherry and berry tones. The aftertaste is more dry and sour than the flavor 50.
Verdict: sweetriot chocolates seem worth starting a small riot over.
