Recalling the past and a friendly sister
At my office we’re fortunate to have some globe-trotting coworkers, generous vendors and most importantly a sales guy in England. Every visit brings Cadbury chocolates. The latest shipment included a number of Cadbury chocolates. The candies that caught my attention the most were the Curly Wurly and Chomp bars.
For those who are familiar with the Marathon bar of yore, the Curly Wurly is similar. I’ve never had the opportunity to try the original Marathon bar, so I can’t give a fair comparison. The Curly Wurly is widely braided caramel coated with milk chocolate. The Chomp is a solid length of caramel coated with milk chocolate.
Curly Wurly: The Curly Wurly has a higher proportion of chocolate to caramel. The flavor of the caramel recalls that of Milk Duds, without the chewier texture. The chocolate is milky and melts away quickly to reveal the caramel. However, some remains caught in the braids, doing a nice job of combining the two flavors.
Chomp: The caramel is thick on this candy and less flavorful than the Curly Wurly. It tastes more milky without the burnt flavors of the other candy. Surprising, given that both are made by Cadbury’s. The chocolate is more overwhelming on this bar and gives more of a chocolate caramel flavor than a caramel chocolate flavor.
Overall, I love caramel, and both of these bars are great. It’s interesting how two very similar bars made by the same manufacturer manage to have different flavors. My next trip to England, I will be sure to pick up some of these bars.

If you are without direct access to England, you can pick these up at Cost Plus World Market (I’m not sure if that’s a regional store or Nationwide…)
Thanks for the Chomp review, I was wondering about it when I saw it at World Market.
And, maybe it’s just because I was about seven years old the last time I had one, but I remember the Marathon being REALLY long, much longer than the Curly Wurly. Hence the name, of course. And size, to a seven year-old on a 75 cent/week candy budget, is EVERYTHING!
