The Chocolate Box — See’s Piece by Piece #49 — Beverly Makes Its Debut

seesbeverlyThere is a new confection behind the glass counters at See’s Candies and your intrepid reporter felt it was her duty to fully investigate it.

The Beverly is the first new milk chocolate covered candy I’ve seen at See’s Candies in a while.  The name Beverly gave no clue to its components, so it was whisked back to The Chocolate Box’s secret test labs for further examination.

Tasting Report:

Description: A round, proud mound of candy that stands almost an inch and a half high, this treat is stuffed with buttercream, almonds and walnuts. It has the usual See’s Candies’ milk chocolate coating covering all with a gentle swirl of chocolate marking the top.  When you bite into it, the filling is creamy beige and the chunks of nut poke through.  The name is a bit of a mystery.  Beverly is from the Old English for a beaver stream or a meadow.  It started as a place name, began being used as a last name and morphed into a first name for both boys and girls, reaching peak popularity in about 1930-1960.  I don’t know if this rich candy was named Beverly after the moneyed environs of Beverly Hills or if someone just liked the name, maybe feeling it had the same flair that Chelsea and Mayfair confections have.

The Beverly appears to be only available in stores at this time.

Taste:  This was a fine candy. It won’t offend anyone (except those who gag at the thought of nuts in their chocolate candy). There’s really nothing wrong with it, but it was very subtle (to be positive) and unexciting (to be blunt).  It had a rich, full taste with the creaminess of the filling offset by the nice, crisp bits of nuts.  Overall, it is a bit too sweet. You could distinguish the two types of nuts, the almonds giving a slightly fruity note and the English walnuts a slightly earthier taste.  Unfortunately, the milk chocolate coating, delicious on its own, was totally lost and didn’t really make its presence known on a bite-to-bite basis.  Perhaps the dark chocolate coating could have better withstood the candy’s richness

See’s Trivia:  Many have searched for the answer to how many calories in a piece of See’s candy.  I (somewhat) answer that question here.

Ingredients:  Since it is a new confection, my trusty ingredient sheet doesn’t cover the Beverly. The milk chocolate coating is probably the same as on other See’s Candies: sugar, milk, cocoa butter, chocolate, soy lecithin and vanillin.  Based on other See’s buttercreams, it is also a pretty safe bet to guess that there is sugar, cream and butter in the filling, as well as almonds and walnuts.  The sign in the See’s Candies’ shop read ”buttercream with sweet vanilla, almonds and walnut.”

Well Fed Network Rating: I would rate the Beverly as about a 7.5 as compared to other See’s Candies confections on a scale of 1 to 10.  Pros: Nothing wrong with it. Cons: Nothing special about it, either.
