Mint Madness

vanilla_mint_patty.jpgI hit the after-Christmas sales and bought two limited editions: York Vanilla Mint Patties and Kit Kat Mint Dark Chocolate.

I wasn’t sure what to expect of the York patties. I mean, how different could they possibly be from the original? The answer is, subtly different, but enough to tell. When you bite into it, you expect that burst of peppermint flavor, but instead it’s a gentler mint with the creaminess of vanilla. They’re quite good, but I don’t know that I’d prefer them over the basic peppermint version.

kitkat_minis.jpgAs for the Kit Kats, I keep getting fooled. Every time I buy a Limited Edition Kit Kat, I think it’s the filling that’s going to be different, when in fact, it’s always the chocolate part. I thought these would have a layer of white mint filling, but the inside is the same as a regular Kit Kat. It’s the dark chocolate that’s flavored with mint. Still, I liked these a lot. The mint isn’t overpowering and goes well with the dark chocolate.

The dark chocolate mint Kit-Kats are “to die for”. They are very light, crispy and have a considerable amount of chocolate coating, are not overly sweet, with just the right amount of mint added. I love dark chocolate and mint. Most commercial candy products are too sweet for me so I don’t like many of them. My favorite dark chocolate is the Droste 72%. I can eat a peppermint patty but would like it coated with twice as much dark chocolate. I love the wafer crispiness of Kit-Kats but don’t like milk chocolate that much and was surprised to see these before Christmas. I didn’t expect them to be very good…BUT after trying them went back to the store and bought TEN bags! They were on sale at Target for $1.77. They freeze very well….taste exactly the same when thawed.
